A thumbnail is the first thing viewers see. A clear, simple design can make people click. Here are the basics that work for most channels.
Use the right size
YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9) and a file smaller than 2 MB. On Pixvora, open any landscape image, click download and choose the YT Thumb preset. Drag the preview so the important part stays inside the frame.
Keep the safe area free
YouTube shows the video length in the bottom-right corner, so avoid placing text or faces there. Also keep important content away from the very edges, because small screens crop them.
Choose a background that supports the subject
A good thumbnail background does not compete with your text. Blurred city scenes, simple workspaces and plain colour gradients work well. Try our landscape image collection or the city skyline images for travel and news style videos.
Text rules
- Use three to five words at most.
- Use a heavy, readable font and high contrast (light text on dark or dark text on light).
- Do not repeat the whole title. Add a curiosity or a benefit instead.
One clear focus
One subject, one message. If you add a face, make it large and expressive. If you add an object, keep it clean and easy to recognise on a small phone screen.
Stay consistent
Use the same fonts, colours and layout across a series of videos. Viewers should recognise your channel before they read the title.
Test before you publish
- Shrink the thumbnail to the size of a stamp. Can you still read it?
- Look at it on a phone and on a computer.
- Compare two versions if your channel allows testing.
About AI images
Pixvora images are AI-generated. That is fine for backgrounds, but do not use an AI person as if they were a real guest or expert in your video. Read the license for what is allowed.
